Upping the Ante

Dear Rose Park Reformed Church Family,

This week’s letter comes from Mary Wisner…

At first, our giving (Larry and I) was about following the rule. We tithed regularly to the church. It wasn’t until we stretched our level of giving that we began to experience the joy of giving. After hearing the testimony of a couple in our church of their giving practice we were moved.

Looking at our paltry offering, carefully constructed, we took a step out of the box. We experienced God filling in what we thought were going to be blank spots. Money showed up in unexpected ways and our level of contentment changed.

Giving is not about rule following. That attitude will get you nowhere. Read in II Corinthians 9:7 that “God loves a cheerful giver” not one under compulsion. I take that to mean to be prepared to give, regularly and spontaneously. God will show you ways to be generous. As Pastor Mark often says, “he who has eyes to see and ears to hear...”

So here is the challenge. GIVE MORE. Find some way to up the ante, even if you think it is too small to make it worth it. If you are willing, give testimony. In so doing you will make it more real to you and encourage others.

Thank you for the pleasure of writing to you this summer.

Sincerely your sister in Christ,

Mary Wisner
