How Much?

Dear Rose Park Reformed Church Family,

This week’s letter comes from our beloved Mary Wisner…

Once I dreamt that I was taking an essay exam, and the one question on it was “What should I give?” I wrote a snarky answer I don’t remember.  It is a question that comes up often. Should I leave a tip? How much? Should I round up to give at the cash register?  Should I give toward that charity that just came through the mail? Should I give to the beggar on the street? Should I give toward this fundraiser? Should I give to the solicitor at my door? We know we should be giving to the church. How much? The assumption here is that we are talking about money. It is clear in the Bible we should give and frequently speaks of money and our attitude toward it.

It is obvious the people of RPRC have been generous over the years. The size and number of additions to the building alone are indictors. When the church talks about money it’s usually about the logistics. Do we have enough? How are we going to spend what we have? Raising funds for this or that project. The offering was such and such amount falling short or meeting projected budget amounts. Thank God for our “bean counter” types among us. I wouldn’t want the job, nor would I be good at it. However, there are other categories to approach this topic of money.

In the next series of letters, I intend to write about money and giving. In the meantime, examine your own thoughts about it. What has been your practice? Do you think you might be challenged?

Hopefully you won’t have any strange dreams.

Blessings, Mary Wisner
