God in a Box?

Dear Rose Park family,

Today’s letter comes from our beloved Mary Wisner…

Our God is unexplainable. Sunday, Pastor Mark hit my point home perfectly.

Talking about Jesus as both divine and human Pastor Mark used categories only for God. They really don’t fit into our experience. We want to put God in a box. Explain him and his actions. Make him into a nice and neat predictable package, making ourselves God in the process.

As we saw in the first two chapters of Job, God let Satan have his way with Job. We also read there that Satan was not allowed to mess with Job without God’s permission. The only way one is able to have peace is to understand that God is behind the scenes and he has his reasons. His thoughts are not our thoughts nor his ways our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

The way to “peace that passes understanding” (Phil. 4:7) is to not to put God in a box, make him explainable. That is what Job’s friends did. The next chapters are the speeches Job’s friends make trying to put God in some sort of explainable posture.

Do you want God to be that small? I sincerely hope not.

May you have the “peace that passes understanding.”

Mary Wisner
