Scarcity vs. Abundance

Dear RPRC family,

This week’s letter comes from Mary Wisner…

In the last letter we saw that everything is the LORDS. It is a worldview that is foundational to generous giving. In today’s letter I am going to discuss scarcity vs. abundance mindsets that are opposing world views.

For example, a child with a new infant in the house may think his parents’ love must now be divided between two thereby reducing the amount of love available to him. We all know that is not the case.  Love multiplies.

The Bible uses an agrarian metaphor. Referring to giving, the one who sows sparingly reaps sparingly. The one who sows generously reaps generously. (II Cor. 9:6). If one believes that resources are limited it affects how much one is willing to give away. Thinking, there may not be enough for me left over. If one believes there is an abundance of resources, he/she is more likely to give what is available. Giving is not as scary.

Where do you fall on an abundance vs scarcity continuum?  How has that effected your giving practices?

Of course, there are many other implications of the abundance vs scarcity mindsets but there isn’t enough room here to go into all of it. Is that a scarcity mindset?

Until next week,

Mary Wisner
